Amphitheater, Ouray, Ouray County, Colorado, United States of America
Size Range:
Miniature (4.5-7 cm)
Size:
6.5 × 3 × 3 cm
Largest Crystal:
6.50cm
Description

The quartz after calcite epimorphs make this an unusual specimen. Several scalenohedral calcite crystals formed on the face of this crystal. Quartz then encrusted them before the calcite was subsequently dissolved. The Cliffhanger Pocket has produced some spectacular milky quartz specimens and was featured on the cover of the Sep/Oct, 2006 issue of Rocks & Minerals. Having been recovered from a near surface pocket, there is slight chipping as a result of the freeze/thaw cycle at this high mountain locality. One cast near the bottom has been partly broken but it really doesn't significantly affect the aesthetics of this unique piece.
