Type Locality

Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Tombstone District, Cochise County, Arizona, United States of America
Class:
Crystals on Matrix
Size Range:
Thumbnail (1-3cm)
Size:
1.8 × 1.3 × 0.4 cm
Description

White crystals of the very rare tellurite-tellurate mineral girdite from the type locality in Tombstone.

However, the correct labelling of girdite should be probably ottoite since the name girdite was discredited in 2016 by the IMA:

""The powder X-ray diffraction pattern of ottoite is very similar to that reported for girdite. Examination of girdite type material suggests that its description was based upon data obtained from at least two and possibly three different phases, one of which may correspond to ottoite." (source Mindat).

Ex Vandenbroucke Museum collection from Waregem, Belgium.
