Tsumeb Mine, Otavi Highlands, Namibia

Crystals on Matrix
Size Range:
Thumbnail (1-3cm)
Size:
1 × 0.8 × 0.5 cm
Description

Plenty of white and colorless, but also PINK, crystals of the extremely rare mineral chudobaite from the type locality in Tsumeb.

Chudobaite was labeled as RRR in Tsumeb Gebhard book (extremely rare, single occurrence with les than 10 specimens ).

What is unusual of this specimen is that in addition to the colorless and white crystals, it has a very small area of pinkish crystals (photo 3), the original color of the first chudobaite find in Tsumeb in 1957. See Gebhard Tsumeb II book p. 256 for a complete story of this find ("Until the last year of mining at Tsumeb only this one specimen plus a single crystal of this rare pinkish mineral existed" and "pinkish chudobaite is a obviously atipic for the mineral "). After this book it seems that only the original specimen was pink and the later ones were almost exclusively colorless or white.

So, don't get the opportunity to get a pink chudobaite !
