Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Tripp Mine, Cardiff Township, Haliburton County, Ontario, Canada
Class:
Massive/Crystalline
Size Range:
Small miniature (3-4.5 cm)
Size:
3 × 2 × 1.5 cm
Description

Massive, heavily-etched, dark purple fluorite of the variety antozonite.

The presence of antozonite, and the signature smell of the broken mineral was used by miners as an indicator that uraninite was nearby.

Crushing or breaking this fluorite releases fluorine which reacts with the air to produce an odd smell, hence the name "stinkfluss".

Note that this sample is NOT radioactive.
