A.E. Foote; Michigan School of Mines; etc
With Antique Label

Description Tabs

Sevier County, Arkansas, United States of America
Size Range:
Miniature (4.5-7 cm)
6 × 4 × 3 cm

This is a coarsely crystalline stibnite specimen, and one with a long history.

Remnants of the A. E. Foote label indicate it was in his inventory at least as early as 1893 – 1895. From there the piece was acquired by the Michigan School of Mines which evolved to the Michigan College of Mines. The DM/20252/K notation is from the A. E. Seaman Museum.

According to George Robinson of the Seaman Museum, this specimen was one of two or three similar pieces in the collection that were de-accessioned for sale. Museum records indicate that the partial label still attached is that of A. E. Foote.

The specimen was one of thousands in the original teaching collections at the Michigan School of Mines. The "DM" (display mineral) series numbers were assigned much later in the 1970s-80s by Jean Kemp, the Curator in charge of the collections at that time.

The "K" at the end stands for Kalliokowski. Jorma Kalliokowski (now retired and in his 80s) was the Chair of the Geology Department Dept. at that time and it was he who ordered the transfer of literally thousands of surplus reference-teaching specimens to the museum. The piece weighs about 160 grams.
