Description

This is a specimen of banded colloform sphalerite of the shalenblende variety, in association with calcite. One side of the specimen has been cut to display the patterns.

It is possible that acicular or skeletal "knitted" galena crystals (gestrickte Bleiglanze) are enclosed in in the alternating layers of galena and sphalerite. Such textures have been found in many low-temperature carbonate-hosted Pb-Zn deposits, such as that found at Pine Point, North West Territories.

For more information about the skeletal micro-crystals of galena found in the Pine Point schalenblende, read the 1968 paper Two crystallographically different types of skeletal galena associated with colloform sphalerite by Radostina Atanassova, Ivan K. Bonev.
