Hollinger Mine, Tisdale Township, Porcupine, Cochrane District, Ontario, Canada

Massive/Crystalline

Description

Silvery cleavages of altaite ( EDS confirmed) with gold in quartz. Altaite is rare in the Timmins camp and is seldom available. This sample came from a larger piece that was collected in 1935 by George S. Scott.

This specimen is noteworthy in that samples of the gold ore from the Hollinger Mine are very scarce. Mine "loss prevention" methods were strictly enforced. This included lunchbox inspections as well as requiring the miners to walk naked in front of security personel as the workers made their way from underground toward the "dry" where their clean clothing was hung.
