Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Vermilion Mine, Denison Township, Sudbury District, Ontario, Canada
Size Range:
Miniature (4.5-7 cm)
Size:
4.5 × 3.5 × 2 cm
Description

This is a very rich sample of violarite featuring a vein of almost solid violarite 2.5cm thick which exhibits violarite’s excellent cleavage. The vein also contains minor pyrite, chalcopyrite and carbonate. This is the type locality for violarite, and the violarite from here is unusual in that it is predominantly primary and is the main nickel mineral in the deposit. The main nickel mineral in all the other Sudbury deposits is pentlandite.
