Description

Well preserved fossil crab (potamidae) with beautiful details in travertine from the famous white travertine falls and terraces of Pamukkale (if you haven't heard of this before you should check for pictures online - it's one of the most beautiful geological wonders of the world).

This crab was totally incrusted and later replaced by calcite. It was found in an outcrop a few kilometers from Denizli, close to Pamukkale. The age is Pleistocene. Encrusted cave-pearl-like aggregates are probably coprolites (fossil poo).

Those crabs are very rare. Mining has stopped at the locality and it's almost impossible to get anything like this out of Turkey.

Back and sides are cut.
