Description

One of the rarities of this auction: cotunnite from Vesuvius.

A scoria matrix richly coated with efflorescences of cotunnite, a myriad of microcrystals making most of the surface of grey-white color. Most likely derived from Cl-rich fumarolic activity.

The specimen dates back to 1957 and it was collected within the Vesuvius volcano main crater, which is unaccessible nowadays if not to well-equipped scientific teams.

On grey tack in a plastic box, thus well-protected. Oldtimer and connoisseur material, this is one of the very few cotunnite locales in Italy. Handwritten label in Italian.
