Description

A specimen of calcite crystals from the famous 'Il Castellaccio' quarry, Northern Italy. Numerous candid white to pale grey calcite crystals populate a marl slice, mostly showing evident growth patterns on their faces. Most crystals display good lustre and partial transparency, especially at the tips. These calcite crystals typical show pink fluorescence (not tested on this specimen). One of them (photographed) has a very evident internal 'rainbow', given by a structural defect.

The locality has provided some of the best Italian calcite crystals to date. The quarry has shut down its operations a few years ago and it is currently undergoing environmental reclamation, thus effectively stopping the possibility of new finds. These are real Italian classics.
