Description
Locality:
Ojén, Málaga, Andalusia, Spain
Class:
Crystals on Matrix
Size Range:
Small cabinet (7-10 cm)
Size:
5.4 × 7 × 2.9 cm
Description

Choice specimen of pyrite crystals in spatic calcite from this Spanish locality. Crystals are very fresh and lustrous, with minimal oxidation stains which appear rather stable. Pyrite is very well formed, and it shows two different three different crystal habits in the same specimen. The rhombohedral one, typically embedded in the matrix, appears replaced by goethite.
A very peculiar specimen.

In excellent conditions. Former B. Flurin collection (Switzerland).

B. Flurin was a knowledgeable Swiss collector. He was specialised in Swiss localities, but specialized in choice specimens, odd quartz shapes and inclusions.
As his collection was mostly assembled between the 50s and the 70s - when the Swiss road system was significantly implemented - he has access to specimens whose localities are now largely either defunct or restricted. He rarely acquired specimens from non-Swiss localities, unless they were really of high interest or odd.
One key feature of his collection was that, with only a few exceptions, his specimens were glued on custom made wooden bases, which he would also paint one by one. All specimens in his collections were balanced aesthetically, as they would display best.

Sizes do not include the wooden base.
