Description

Pale blue cubes populate a vein along with pale quartz. Medium lustre and locally good transparency. The fluorite faces are mostly smooth and appear to have some semi-square growth patterns. Some minor jet black, lustrous masses of crystalline sphalerite can be spotted throughout the matrix.

While Baveno quarries are a world renowned locality, this nearby occurrence is scarce, poorly known and long defunct. Several decades ago, and while the A26 highway was being built, the roadcut met some hydrothermal veins rich in fluorite and minor sphalerite. Fluorite, typically associated to milky quartz, was initially yellow, but shortly after the extraction became blue. Only a handful of those specimens were well preserved across the years.
