Sphalerite & Galena

Secondary Sphalerite

Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Broken Hill South Mine, Broken Hill, Yancowinna County, New South Wales, Australia
Size Range:
Small cabinet (7-10 cm)
Size:
5.4 × 9 × 5.8 cm
Description

An elongated domed specimen of secondary sphalerite with a cream to yellow colour with secondary galena crystals. This ore has been refered to as brunckite due to its resemblance to the black and white banded sulphide ores from Peru. The use of this name is now discoraged by academics and is not a valid species name. Analysis has shown this secondary sphalerite to be pure sphalerite and is often found in association with faults and water coarses
