Cuprite Native Silver & Copper In Cerussite

Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Proprietary Mine, Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia
Size Range:
Cabinet (10-18 cm)
Size:
2.8 × 11.9 × 5.4 cm
Description

A simple appearing but complex specimen from the upper levels of the Proprietary Mine.

The core of the specimen consists of a mixture of native silver and native copper partially encapsulated in crystalline cerussite. The silver and copper have further altered to bright red cuprite crystals, green malachite and silver sulphosalts. Red cuprite can be seen in areas in the cerussite. These are the type of complex oxidised mineral specimens that made Broken Hill so famous for both the richness of its ores and its specimens.
