Description

Sharp and aerial crystal of calcite, with good transparency and lustre, developed on a cleaved rhombohedral crystal of white calcite. Minor yellow pale yellow fluorescence under UV.

The specimen is from the Azkárate quarry (Eugui), that was exploited for magnesite, but it is world-known for the dolomite crystals. The extracted magnesite “ore” was mainly massive or blocky. However, euhedral well-crystalized specimens such as this one were only occasionally extracted and recovered, so they are very rare in mineral collections. The Azkárate Quarry is now closed and restored.
