Pseudomorph

Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Star of the Congo Mine, Lubumbashi, Haut-Katanga, DR Congo
Class:
Single Crystal
Size Range:
Micromount (under 1cm)
Size:
0.4 × 0.4 × 0.4 cm
Description

Uncommon and very hard to obtain are these old martite pseudomorphs of hematite after magnetite from the Star of the Congo Mine. This is a small piece but I only have seen a few of such pieces in private collections outside museums. Minor magnetism is still present, so the magnetite replacement by hematite has not been completed.

From the collection of Georges Vanacker*, a well-known Belgian systematic collector.

*Vanackerite from Tsumeb was named after him.
