Erongo Mountains, Karibib, Erongo Region, Namibia
Class:
Crystal Group/Cluster
Size Range:
Miniature (4.5-7 cm)
Size:
6.2 × 5.3 × 2.8 cm
Weight:
78.00gr
Description

Flattened group of unusually sharp, pale violet-purple bicoloured crystals of fluorite with wide granny octahedral faces, smooth square cube faces, with the edges modified by dodecahedral faces. The crystals are clearly twinned, with a symmetry relationship between the two that is roughly a reflection across an octahedral face. However, the contact plane is not a net clear plane such as in the spinel-law twinned crystals. Similar specimens have been studied by Smith & Holtkamp (2021) and have been defined NOT as spinel-law twinned but as penetration twinned crystals. In perfect condition, completely free of damages, it is afloater specimen, with nice growth steps at the rear.

Found in 07/2019.

Smith, R. & Holtkamp, M. (2021). Twinning in Fluorite crystals. Mineralogical Record, 52 (2), 159-166.
