Description

Single terminated crystal of quartz from the Katonto Hill, a very uncommon and rare locality from the DR Congo, better known by the pieces of goethite after pyrite. Quartz from Katonto are extremely rare to see, especially in this size. Some chippings are present at the termination, and the other faces show typical indentations that are the result of intergrown quartz faces with flattened rhombohedral crystals of a limonitized carbonate phase (siderite?) that is now completely altered to powdery limonite and eroded.

Found before 1960, the specimen is from the stock of Robert Verdoodt, who was working in the laboratories of Union Minière du Haut-Katanga and evacuated to Belgium after the beginning of the Congo crisis that very year.
