Description

Crystallized aggregate of brown willemite and black octahedral franklinite in a matrix of white calcite, a classic combination from Franklin. Under long ultraviolet light willemite is light green and calcite is pink. Under short ultraviolet light the colours are very intense. Willemite displays strong green fluorescence, while calcite is deep orange-red. Mn2+ is the cause of these fluorescence’s, that replaces Zn2+ in willemite, and Ca2+ in calcite. Pb as a co-activator is the pre-ignition of the manganese fluorescence. Franklinite is not fluorescent.

Ex Roger Gnat specimen.
