Galena On Calcite

Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Beez Quarry, Namur, Namur District, Belgium
Class:
Crystals on Matrix
Size Range:
Small miniature (3-4.5 cm)
Size:
4 × 4 × 2 cm
Description

This is not just a typical galena from the Beez quarry but an uncommon aesthetic specimen showing superb cubic galena crystals with the corners modified by octahedral faces, with minor marcasite crystals of golden green colour. They rest in a calcite matrix that has been etched to expose the sulphides. A limited amount of such pieces was found cause the calcite filled fracture was about 10 m in length but very thin, typically 1 cm, with just some short broader areas, that reached 4 cm at most, and produced these superb pieces, the best found in the quarry so far.

According to the local collector who found the specimen some 6-7 years ago, only 12 specimens were recovered, and the best I have seen is a 15 cm piece with galena crystals up to 3 cm. Beautiful!.
