Description

This is a good representative specimen of a Super classic iconic rock, the Witwatersrand, an old metamorphosed conglomerate that were sedimented almost 3 billion years ago. The Witwatersrand conglomerates form the greatest goldfield in the world.

This specimen is a typical conglomeratic gold ore, where the rounded white and grey quartz pebbles are clearly recognized and with abundant detrital pyrite between the quartz pebbles. This samples are rich in gold, mostly included in the pyrites.

It comes with a handwritten from Mr. Virlet, who obtained this specimen in 1962 from his good friend, the geologist Gilbert Gauthier. Ex René Virlet specimen.
