Azcárate Quarry, Eugui, Esteríbar, Navarre, Spain
Class:
Crystals on Matrix
Size Range:
Small miniature (3-4.5 cm)
Size:
3.4 × 2.6 × 1.9 cm
Description

Attractive flower-like aggregate of lustrous lenticular magnesite crystals of ivory colour associated to rarely present calcite and transparent quartz. Calcite displays also a strong pale yellow fluorescence under UV. The specimen is from the Azkárate quarry (Eugui), that was exploited for magnesite, but it is world-known for the dolomite crystals. The extracted magnesite “ore” was mainly massive or blocky. However, euhedral well-crystalized specimens such as this one were only occasionally extracted and recovered, so they are very rare in mineral collections. The Azkárate Quarry is now closed and restored.

Found by Francisco Maello in 1992.
