Description

Gitter quartz is a rare form of growth. It can be confused by similar Japanese twinned quartz, but they are not. This specimen is a good representative aggregate of intergrown gitter quartz crystals, some double-terminated, that grew epitaxially in four directions out of the faces of a prismatic orthoclase crystal. Furthermore, the original orthoclase crystal is completely replaced by quartz, so the pseudomorph is tube-like specimen, hollow at the base but complete at the top, richly coated by hyalite opal that is strongly fluorescent under long and short UV illumination.

Acquired in 2002. Ex Iván Blanco collection.
