Description

White flakes of cristobalite in black obsidian, a vitreous volcanic glass rock that forms when acid magmas erupts as molten lava on to the surface of the Earth and cools quickly. This snowflake obsidian from the Black Rock desert is of late Tertiary age. The white flakes in this snowflake obsidian form when glass devitrified with time and silica inside crystallizes as cristobalite. Good representative specimen for the locality and rock type.
