Description

This is a good size piece recovered from this find. It is a branch of wood replaced by white natrolite needles with the centre of the cavities filled by caramel brown calcite. One of the ends has been sawn to enhance the internal structure. The external bark is well preserved in detail with beautiful nodes. Interestingly some tiny dark green to black crystals (augite?) are also “pasted” to the bark, as part of the volcanic tuff that formed the matrix, showing that this uncommon natrolite-calcite fossilization is a product of a volcanic eruption.

Found in 02/2012 at the Mount Elgon (a remote locality in Uganda) by the Dutch collector Bert Biemold, and this piece comes from his personal collection.
