Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Kamoto East Open Cut, Kamoto, Kolwezi, Lualaba, DR Congo
Class:
Massive/Crystalline
Size Range:
Miniature (4.5-7 cm)
Size:
4.5 × 4.5 × 0.1 cm
Description

Typical thin leaf of native copper from Kamoto. This kind of ore materials are not very spectacular but they are very interesting from the geological and mineralogical point of view, and of course very very rare in collections because not many pieces survive the mining activity. The general given locality in the label is “Kamoto”, and probably it is from the south slope of the Kamoto East Open cut.

Collected before 1960, the specimen is from the stock of Robert Verdoodt, who was working in the laboratories of Union Minière du Haut-Katanga and evacuated to Belgium after the beginning of the Congo crisis and the declaration of independence.
