Description

Cluster of thick, short prismatic crystals of atacamite of dark green colour and very good lustre, from the New Cornwall Mine (South Australia).

If you think of the top 10 Classic Localities that have produced specimens only before the 20th Century, the New Cornwall Mine is certainly among them. A superb article of this classic mine appeared recently in the Mineralogical Record Journal (Mar-Apr. 2019, N°50, 2). The locality produced for a very short period of 5 years (from 1863 to 1868), and they are considered the world best specimens for atacamite, so really hard to find if not from recycled collections.

This specimen comes with a label from the René Virlet collection, who exchanged it with Martin Ehrmann in 1972. A great opportunity to add this historical piece to your collection!.
