Payun Volcano, Altiplano de Payun Matru, Mendoza, Argentina
Class:
Crystal Group/Cluster

Small miniature (3-4.5 cm)

Description

Nice growths of lustrous hematite crystals that are pseudomorphs after magnetite, the so called martite variety. A second generation of very lustrous foliaceous hematite microcrystals cover almost completely the group. The original magnetite crystals developed as interpenetrated octahedra along the three axes, at 90° angles, forming a notably aesthetic arborescent growth of cross form in 3D. Found in 2009.

Collecting at the Payún volcano is prohibited nowadays because the zone is now a National Park.
