Qalat Payeen, Bandar Abbas, Hormozgan Province, Iran
Class:
Crystal Group/Cluster
Size Range:
Thumbnail (1-3cm)
Size:
1 × 0.8 × 0.6 cm
Description

Group of sharp zunyite crystal with very good lustre and cream colour. The habitus is tetrahedral {111}, with the edges modified by cube faces {100}. The two bigger crystals are just randomly related but they show penetration twins with other crystals. Twinning in zunyite is rare and here is clearly visible. The bigger crystal is 6.5 mm in size, and all are in pristine condition!.

This specimen is from a new find (02/2019) at the Qalat-e Bala plug, a quite eroded salt dome that has about 4 km in diameter. As far as today, there are at least 7 different localities in this dome where significant zunyite crystals have been found in different sizes and colours (red, brown, orange, black, white, pale cream, green, bicoloured, etc). Twinned zunyites are quite uncommon here too.
