Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Hormuz Island, Hormozgan Province, Iran
Class:
Single Crystal
Size Range:
Thumbnail (1-3cm)
Size:
2 × 1.6 × 1.5 cm
Description

Floater single crystal of hematite with a tabular “pseudo-hexagonal” habitus, black colour of intense metallic lustre. It is complete, without damages, with the faces showing some holes because of the contact with the irregular matrix. The hexagonal form {110} is partially modified by some {102} faces, culminated by {001}.

These hematites from the Hormuz Island are quite rare in collections but they can be considered as “Classics” cause some crystals have been used as jewellery since at least 1800 years BC (Makovicky et al., 2014).
