Description

A piece of obsidian, a vitreous volcanic glass rock that forms when molten lava erupts on to the surface of the Earth and cools quickly. This snowflake obsidian from the Black Rock desert is of late Tertiary age. The white flakes of cristobalite in this snowflake obsidian form when glass devitrified with time and crystallize.
