Description

This is a highly uncommon and hard to find specimen of crystallized chalcopyrite form a world-class locality for gemmy twinned dolomite. The main disphenoidal chalcopyrite crystal surpass 20 mm in size, is very well formed and coated by a thin layer of green malachite. However, it is clearly chipped, exposing the golden interior but the size and uncommon locality justify its inclusion in this auction.

The matrix is composed of black magnesite and white to transparent dolomite crystals with good lustre and classic contact twins on {1000}. Tens of smaller malachite-coated chalcopyrite crystals are spotted on the dolomite rhombohedra.

From a limited find made by Francisco Maello (ES) in 1991. The Azcárate Quarry is closed, and it is now in the restoration period.
