Description

From the Kamiaba region (South Katanga) a very remote locality close to the border with Zambia, this specimen features deep red rhombic dodecahedral crystals of almandine, with good definition of stepped and lustrous faces and net edges, imbibed in a pale calcite matrix and a grey silicified rock.

The specimen was collected before 1968 by René Virlet, a Belgian colonist who visited the locality at least two times together with collectors Gilbert Gauthier and Roger Van Dooren. Uncommon locality specimen in collections, these garnets have never been abundant at all. Furthermore, this specimen is quite big for the locality.
