Description

A XIX Century specimen of bournonite from Bavaria (Germany) with a label of the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences. (Ex. Samuel Ashmead; Ex. William S. Vaux).

I was curious about this specimen so I contacted The Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences to ask about this specimen and by so, interesting information was provided by Dr. Evan Peugh (archives assistant) and Dr. Ned Gilmore (collections manager). They said:

“Our catalogs list the Bournonite specimen from Bavaria under the unique identifier 1063 as well as the Dana number 119... The specimen may have been received by the Academy as part of a large donation of minerals (400 specimens) on April 19, 1864 from a bequest of the late Samuel Ashmead.... The Vaux’s label which you have with the specimen was given to the specimen in the Academy’s collection sometime in the late 1800’s after the Academy received the large bequest of the William Vaux collection and the start of the modern catalogs... Vaux acquired his collection throughout the 19th century until his death in 1882".

Acquired in 2011, it is an Ex. A. Gelders specimen.
