Description

This is a representative, old time specimen of nickelskutterudite from the type locality, the Schneeberg district. The silver grey crystals are very lustrous and are formed by cube and octahedral faces. They are implanted in a silicified rock and separated by red barite.

I detached this specimen off a big block (35x25 cm) when trimming a museum quality “chloanthite” from the collection of Georges Vanacker*, a well-known Belgian systematic collector. This big specimen was acquired in Germany short after the end of the Second World War (1948).

*Vanackerite (from Tsumeb) is named after him.
