Classic Locality

Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Shangulowé Mine, Kambove, Lualaba, DR Congo
Class:
Crystals on Matrix
Size Range:
Small miniature (3-4.5 cm)
Size:
3.3 × 3.1 × 1.6 cm
Description

Aggregate of transparent interpenetrated baryte crystals, that form parallel botryoidal crusts, with a characteristic light greenish-blue colour. Traditionally these barytes have been considered to be coloured by malachite inclusions, but after a Raman analysis we can not concluded what is the colouring phase (probably chrysocolla? or a Cu-Si rich gel?), but it is not malachite for sure.

Collected before 1960, the specimen is from the stock of Robert Verdoodt, who was working in the laboratories of Union Minière du Haut-Katanga and evacuated to Belgium after the beginning of the Congo crisis and the declaration of independence.
