Description

We are very glad to offer this unique, big, undamaged specimen of Tasselia ordamensis, composed of apatite and siderite, and partially transformed into compacted limonite. First discovered by professor Van Tassel (vantasselite) in marine deposits of Lower Pleistocene, and composition described (Van Tassel, R., 1964a,b) at the Kanaaldok B1 (Berendrecht), during the enlargement in 1964 of the Port of Antwerp (Belgium). Interpreted by Heinzelin (1964) as possible Pogonophores fossils?, and latter assigned as Tasselia ordamensis by Hantzschel (1975).

The Ichnofossil Tasselia ordamensis (De Heinzelin, 1964), is a protrusive structure composed of a lined inner tube surrounded by vertically stacked sediment disks and ending in a basal chamber. This domain was formed by excavation due to deposit feeding; thereby non-ingested particles remained in the chamber and ingested particles passed through the gut to the sediment surface. The structure suggest that were produced by maldanid polychaetes (Olivero & López-Cabrera, 2010).

This specimen was collected by Werner Heirman in 1964 simultaneously with Professor Van Tassel.
