El Refugio Mine, Choix, Choix Municipality, Sinaloa, Mexico

Crystals on Matrix

Miniature (4.5-7 cm)

Description

A top quality specimen of lustrous blue smithsonite that, in sunlight, exhibits rare iridescence that is infrequently seen in material from this classic Mexican locality. I have specialized in collecting Mexican minerals for almost 30yrs and have seen very few smithsonite examples with this attractive optical property.

Difficult to photograph and much better in real time. The first image illustrates the property to some extent.
