Graphite

Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Seathwaite Graphite Mine, Borrowdale, Cumbria, United Kingdom
Class:
Massive/Crystalline
Size Range:
Miniature (4.5-7 cm)
Size:
5 × 3.5 × 2 cm
Description

A good example of classic Cumbrian graphite from the historic Seathwaite deposit operating since the fifteenth century. It has been generally recognised that graphite from this locality has the highest purity of any large deposit worldwide. These specimens are becoming increasingly hard to source.

I always put the graphite in my mineral cupboard to use when I have a squeaky hinge. A little rub with the solid lubricant is just as effective and less messy than oil, yet never detracts from the specimens appearance.
