Description

'Blue John' has been prized worldwide for well over 100 yrs for its exceptional decorative properties and this specimen is much rarer than the norm as it contains fossils. A super piece from a group of I recently acquired from a Derbyshire 'Blue John' dealer. He had purchased a sizable collection, mostly of worked goblets etc., from the family of William Smedley a 19th century spar and marble worker in Matlock Bath.

Blue John occurs in a limestone area, in fact the world famous 'Blue John' cavern is actually a show cave with most of the material for working coming fron nearby mines. This sizable specimen has a flat polished display face showing a number of fossils. The rough side shows the more common habit of Blue John.

Very hard to obtain 'Blue John' material.
