A good example of the 'Pencil Ore' habit of hematite. 'Pencil Ore' is a variety of Hematite consisting of hard, almost parallel fibrous crystals, the regularity of which allows it to be split into thin tapering rods, like a pencil lead. These were used by masons to mark stone blocks, the Hematite leaving a red mark scratched into the surface of the stone.
