Gmelinite

Type Locality

Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Little Deerpark Quarry, Glenarm, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom
Size Range:
Cabinet (10-18 cm)
Size:
13 × 8.5 × 6 cm
Description

Occasionally gmelinite from the type locality is found in this unusal but attractive habit. This is the other half, and perhaps more interesting half, of last weeks listing. The gmelinite crystals are again like sandwiches with opaque main faces and a particularly gemmy filling. One cluster of crystals has formed into a ball which very occasionally occurs at the locality. The vug is 7.5 x 4.0cm and lined with small analcime crystals most of which are the rare black variety. This specimen has been trimmed by saw on the back and base to reduce the matrix but this is not obvious in display. Please note that the black analcime will probably fade in the light presenting the dilemma of keeping the specimen in a box or letting the analcime go and appreciating the main gmelinite act as a display. If you are interested in unusual habits in zeolites please look at the analcime specimen I have listed.
