Description Tabs

Santa Rosa Mine, Itambacuri, Minas Gerais, Brazil
Crystal Group/Cluster
Size Range:
Small cabinet (7-10 cm)
8.4 × 6 × 7.34 cm

Heres a unique one, that I call the "Horseshoe" for hopefully obvious reasons. A translucent multicolor (green, blue-green, blue, pink, black,. photo 4) tourmaline var. elbaite that grew around a lithia quartz (quartz included with lepidolite) causing it to take a "U" shape to continue growing.  The termination of the tourmaline has mirror luster and the luster of the tourmaline faces is quite good as well. Around the edge of the termination the tourmaline is aesthetically etched showing lots of square-like geometry. The quartz crystal is well terminated and damage free, there is even a smaller termianted quartz crystal tucked into the void of the horseshoe! Photo 1 was taken with backlighting to aid in showing translucence, in hand the crystal is more translucent than it appears in any of the photos when lit from behind. Photos 3 and 5 show the only real damage to the crystal (a minor chip to the termination) and some damage to the side that shows etching underneath where some of the green skin of the crystal broke loose while in the pocket. This piece was likely mined in the early 70s or 80s and has a catalog sticker on the bottom from an unidentifed collection prior to mine. Despite a little damage this specimen is visually impacting, sizeable at almost a half kilo, and definitely an usual!
