Description

Buchite (also called exotzamite) is the name for contact metamorphic altered sedimentary rock fragments in volcanics that have turned into a glass (at least at the surface of the xenoliths) due to thermal influence of the magma. This is a nice example of a sandstone xenolith with partial surface melting in scoria. There is a new article on these contact metamorphic formations: Bohatý, Jan. (2016). Contact aureole-Buchite (Klipstein 1827) sensu stricto vs. Exotzamit nom. nov. – a new name for pyro-metamorphosed, siliciclastic crustal xenoliths with external glassy rims.
