Description

German classic and quite rare: dark brown to blackish sphalerite crystals on a bit of quartz/sandstone matrix. The specimen was found in a coal mine in the Ruhr region within a mineralized fault zone which was so rich in ore minerals that it was mined for some time for Pb and Zn ore. The ore vein („William-Köhler-Gang“) was found in 1930, mining started in 1938 and lasted until 1962. In total 5,5 million tons of Pb-Zn ore and 400 tons of silver were recovered during that time. Within the 1950s almost 20 % of the (west) german base metal ore production came from Auguste Victoria.
