Description

In the late 1970s/early 1980s these specimens suddenly were abundant on the market and quite quickly disappeared again. This is a very nice example of translucent, deep red-orange calcite stalactites on what appears to be a part of a fossil from Carter County, Montana. The calcites (in the beginning referred to as aragonite - meanwhile obviously analyzed to be calcite) from Carter County are renowned for their form and color. Carter County is in the extreme southeastern part of Montana within the paleozoic Williston Basin, an area not known for fine mineral specimens. It is said that the field collector was Bud Ehrle, and that the calcite specimens came out of (a) cavern(s) in limestone. Nice and typical example.
