Description

This historic New York specimen is from the Sterling Iron Mine at Antwerp. Brassy brownish lustrous aggregates of stilpnomelane, a quite uncommon layered silicate, are settling on iron oxides visually looking like haematite/martite with some calcite (?). The label states haematite (fer oligiste) and magnetite. A very representative, old-time classic specimen from this mine which closed in 1910. Accompanied by handwritten label from the late A.A. Damour (1808-1902).
