Calcite Var Mariposa

Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Buena Tierra Mine, Francisco Portillo, West Camp, Aquiles Serdán Municipality, Chihuahua, Mexico
Size Range:
Small cabinet (7-10 cm)
Size:
6.5 × 9 × 5.3 cm
Description

Really nice small cabinet specimen consisting of first generation dogtooth calcite (scalenohedrons) with deep reddish brown surface (due to iron oxide staining) overgrown by whitish 2nd generation calcite rhombohedrons with yellowish orange colouring by iron oxides.

Therefore nice phantom-like habit, due to their colours these calcites are called 'Mariposa' (butterfly) calcites. This is a marketing name, originally most probably derived from first  finds of comparable specimens at the Mariposa mine, USA. Also the abundant occurrence of butterfly twins may have led to this 'synonym'. Most specimens i saw from Mexico although have only few twins but are really colourful. Tips are intact, showy specimen.
