Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Saarland, Germany
Size Range:
Small cabinet (7-10 cm)
Size:
7.5 × 6 × 4.5 cm
Description

Nice siderite specimen from the Saar coal basin.

The sample dates before 1924, so a few coal mines near Saarbruecken maybe the origin. Most probable is the Jaegersfreude mine, north of Saarbruecken. Also possible: Luisenthal mine, Von der Heydt mine.

The specimens consist of very flat rhombohedrons with lenticular habit of light brownish coulour. Some iron sulfides (pyrite, marcasite(?)) settle in small lustrous crystals on the siderite.

All coal mines around Saarbruecken are closed, no more finds possible.

Classic Saarland specimen.
